DUNAV ULTRA - FOLLOW THE RIVER
DUNAV ULTRA EXPERIENCE
Now in its 7th year, the 2020 Dunav Ultra is run to support and promote the Dunav Ultra Challenge and its Route through Bulgaria following the Danube River.
The promotional event (31.08.2020-1.9.2020) bears the name Dunav Ultra: Follow The River 2020 – for the third consecutive year is hosted by the town of Vidin .
This is then followed by the multi day cycle tour which passes through the towns of Lom, Kozloduy, Mizia, Oryahovo, Gulyantsi, Nikopol, Belene, Svishtov, Dve Mogili, Ruse, Slivo Pole,Tutrakan, Silstra, Dobrich and General Toshevo.
The Dunav Ultra tour is not a competition – it is an individual challenge for each participant/team. There is no prize other than completing this iconic tour. All cyclists start together and everyone is free to cycle at their own speed according to their own individual travel plans. Cyclists are able to avail themselves of any logistical or technical support along the route.
All participants are able to register in one of three categories – individual, a team of two cyclists or a team of four cyclists. Each individual participant or team can choose a pre-planned Dunav Ultra tour duration – up to 48 hours, up to 3 days, up to 5 days, up to 7 days or more than 7 days.
For the first time the 2020 Dunav Ultra will offer participants two alternative MODES (routes) – the Classic and Adventure modes. The route in Classic mode includes only sections with asphalt, concrete or pavement. The Adventure mode route includes an alternative route for some sections, more closely tracking along the Danube River and with a sand, pebble, dirt or even some parts with a forest road.
For the first time Dunav Ultra will offer two alternative MODES (routes) – the Classic and Adventure modes. The route in Classic mode includes only sections with asphalt, concrete or pavement.
The Adventure mode route includes an alternative route for some sections, more closely tracking along the Danube River and with a sand, pebble, dirt or even some parts with a forest road.
The total route length in Classic mode is 666 km. The total route length in Adventure mode is 687 km. The length of the overall route, valid for both modes, is not less than 80% of the total distance for each mode.
The beginning of both modes is from the city of Vidin, and the end point of both modes is the western sign of the village of Durankulak – the northeast settlement of Bulgaria.
The Dunav Ultra 2020 tour is not a race but personal challenge and there are no prizes awarded. It is assumed that all participants/teams go on an self organised bike ride.
For the beginning of the tour, cyclists gather at the location specified by the organizer, and at a designated hour, all participants start together their travel.
During the tour cyclists “unlock” different levels of the route, reaching predefined “checkpoints” and interacting on the spot in a pre-specified manner.
Participants who have successfully interacted through all “checkpoints” and reached the end point of the Dunav Ultra Cycle Route are considered to have successfully completed the Dunav Ultra 2020 tour and receive a certificate.
Choosing a brand, model and type of bicycle is a 100% individual decision for each participant or team. For the sake of maximum comfort and security, please note that the Adventure Mode route involves passing through alternate sections with no artificial pavement. This mode is attractive, but is especially recommended for participants with bicycle types: cross country, mountain bike, gravel, tourist or electric bicycles.
The route in the Classic Mode route involves only sections that are covered with artificial pavement. Please note that the surface may be of poor quality in some places – the use of a carbon road bicycle or carbon components creates some disadvantages and risks. Classic Mode is recommended for bikes type: road, gravel, tourist, single speed / fixed, cross country, mountain bike, electric bicycles.
All the checkpoints at the Dunav Ultra 2020 tour are specially selected sites and/or landmarks.
They will be presented consistently after March 1, 2020.
During the 2020 Dunav Ultra tour, each individual participant/team follows its own pace and speed. There are no restrictions on time controls during the transition. Cyclists navigate the route with a duty to their personal goal, general physical fitness condition and personal motivation, following all the rules of the Road Traffic Act of the Republic of Bulgaria.
Each individual participant/team can specify a pre-planned transition duration – up to 48 hours, up to 3 days, up to 5 days, up to 7 days end even more than 7 days.
Each participant/team that reaches the end point of the Dunav Ultra route, subject to the conditions of interaction, receives a personal certificate. The names of all participants who reach the end point of the route will be published by name on the organizer’s website.
