Classic or Adventure: Which Dunav Ultra Route Is Right for You?

In recent years, the Dunav Ultra route has become a symbol of sustainable cycling tourism and epic cycling adventures, connecting Bulgaria’s northwestern reaches with the Danube, Dobruja and the Black Sea coast.

The varied terrain, layers of cultural heritage and different riding styles the route offers call for an important decision before your first pedal stroke – which will you choose: are you ready to ride the classic or adventure version of the route?

This article will help you find your bearings, plan ahead and, above all, get inspired, because Dunav Ultra is more than a route. It is a way of travelling, engaging with your surroundings, local people, culture and history, and at times feeling truly at one with the place you are exploring.

Dunav Ultra is the ultimate cycling experience!

14 Stages and Two Options – Classic and Adventure

The Dunav Ultra route is approximately 740 kilometres long and follows roads close to Bulgaria’s northern border. To make it easier to plan a journey across such a vast geographical area, the route is divided into 14 stages, which make up the classic version of the route.

Seven of these stages also offer an alternative way to travel: along the rural dirt roads, forest trails, fishing tracks and farm tracks typical of this part of Bulgaria, as well as sections of Roman roads that have survived for millennia. Together, they form the adventure version of the route, a unique experience that brings you closer to the natural landscapes of the Danube and Dobruja, the terrain and your surroundings.

Travelling along the route, you may come across idyllic scenes of local life

Travelling through these less urbanised landscapes offers an entirely different kind of experience. Leaving the main roads and venturing into sparsely populated areas creates a sense of discovery and independence. It is a chance to pass through places that have never featured on the conventional cycling tourism map – and this is one of the greatest strengths of Dunav Ultra.

What Sets the Classic Route Apart?

The classic version of the Dunav Ultra cycling route is the most accessible and versatile way to ride its full length, from the village of Kudelin to Durankulak. It follows Bulgaria’s northernmost region wherever paved roads are available. These are generally secondary and tertiary asphalt roads of reasonable quality, connecting towns and villages along the Danube and across Dobruja. Between Vidin and Silistra, the classic version follows аlmost the same alignment as EuroVelo 6.

The classic route is ideal for road cycling enthusiasts as well as riders who prefer other types of bicycle: gravel, touring, hybrid, electric and even suitably configured cross-country bikes.

The Dunav Ultra route is marked with information boards at many locations

The classic route is suitable for:

  • cyclists experienced in fast-paced rides (over 120 km per day);
  • cycle tourists travelling at a moderate pace (50–60 km per day);
  • people who want to enjoy the region’s culture, nature and cuisine.

This version offers the best logistical support, with accommodation, places to eat, food supplies, shops, repair services and access to public services. Although the roads around the cities of Vidin, Ruse and Silistra, and to some extent Kozloduy, carry heavier motor traffic, many sections are quiet and allow for enjoyable, safe cycling.

In this version, the Dunav Ultra route largely overlaps with the trans-European route EuroVelo 6, making it familiar to both Bulgarian and international cycle travellers.
The classic version of the route is also popular thanks to the annual Dunav Ultra group ride, which brings together nearly 150 cyclists from Bulgaria, Romania and other countries for the country’s most popular multi-day cycle touring event.

Throughout the rest of the year, this version is one of the most promising options for developing sustainable cycling tourism in the region near Bulgaria’s northern border. Interest in the Dunav Ultra route is expected to grow steadily in the coming years as the region’s infrastructure improves.

Advice from Petar Matov, cycling record holder on the Kom–Emine route:
“If you want to embark on your first major cycling journey in Bulgaria – start with the classic version of Dunav Ultra.”

When Should You Choose the Adventure Option?

The adventure version of Dunav Ultra is a distinctive option for those seeking a wild, authentic experience away from traffic. Wherever possible, it leaves the main roads to follow dirt roads and farm tracks, forgotten Roman routes and rural lanes between villages. Its philosophy is simple: away from cars, close to nature.

The pace is slower, but the sense of immersion in the region is much deeper. You need suitable equipment, including a gravel, touring or electric bicycle, as well as navigation skills, good physical fitness, experience communicating with local people and confidence travelling through sparsely populated areas.

The lack of bicycle repair shops in small towns and villages makes suitable equipment and carrying essential spare parts a necessity

Dividing the route into 14 stages makes planning this journey much easier. It is important to know that the start and end points of the stages are the same for both versions, except for the penultimate stage, where the classic version ends in Dobrich and the adventure version in General Toshevo.

Beyond the shorter zigzag detours offered as adventure alternatives, which you can explore in detail, here are several truly impressive sections that firmly put Dunav Ultra on Europe’s map of authentic adventure cycling tourism.

Selected Adventure Stages

  • Stage 7: Nikopol → Belene – crosses the Nikopol Plateau and the unique natural landscapes of Persina Nature Park;
  • Stage 9: Svishtov → Dve Mogili and Ivanovo – an adventurous atmosphere and a break from civilisation through Krivina, Batin and Gorno Ablanovo;

  • Stage 12: Tutrakan → Silistra – a superb experience through exotic natural landscapes, riverside villages and traffic-free stretches: Pozharevo → Dunavets → Dolno Ryahovo → Malak Preslavets → Garvan → Popina → Srebarna (with an optional detour to Vetren);

  • Stage 13: Silistra → Kaynardzha → General Toshevo (The Forgotten Road) – an epic crossing of Dobruja, a region where the atmosphere of Yordan Yovkov’s “Drugoselets” comes vividly to life. This is why we named this stage “The Forgotten Road”, a symbol of venturing beyond the familiar.

These sections are true cycling treasures for authentic cycle touring, especially for travellers seeking quiet, open space and inspiration away from the mainstream routes.
