The Dunav Ultra cycling route has achieved a significant milestone by being featured in Lonely Planet’s “Best in Travel 2024,” which highlights the top 50 must-visit destinations worldwide. The route was presented as a supporting feature of the Danube Limes destination—Lonely Planet’s only tourist recommendation for the Eastern Balkans.
Dunav Ultra: Top 50 Best in Travel

The inclusion of iconic sites in the “100 Dunav Ultra Highlights” has contributed to the route’s connection with the “Danube Limes” destination. These sites include the Baba Vida Fortress (formerly the Roman fortress Bononia), Ulpia Oescus in the village of Gigen, the legionary camp Novae in Svishtov, Sexaginta Prista in Ruse, Durostorum in Silistra, and the Belogradchik Fortress.

With its inclusion in Lonely Planet’s Top 50 recommended destinations for 2024, Dunav Ultra has emerged on the global travel and adventure map, providing new horizons for tourism development both regionally and nationally.
Among the leading institutions and organizations partnering with the route are the America for Bulgaria Foundation, the Ministry of Tourism, and numerous municipalities, including Bregovo, Vidin, Lom, Kozloduy, Mizia, Oryahovo, Dolna Mitropoliya, Gulyantsi, Nikopol, Belene, Svishtov, Tsenovo, Dve Mogili, Ivanovo, Ruse, Glavinitsa, Tutrakan, Silistra, General Toshevo, and Shabla.
In 2017, the Dunav Ultra cycling route received the Grand Prize for “Tourism Innovation of the Year” at the Annual Awards of the Ministry of Tourism of the Republic of Bulgaria.
“Danube Limes” refers to the established logistical military and civilian infrastructure along the Danube River, marking the northeastern boundary of the Roman Empire on the continent.
